Yep- i've had this exact problem on a Volvo water pump. the hole behind the impeller is there for a purpose - it lets the water leaking throught the first seal out instead of getting through the second seal into the engine.
you remove the water pump, pull out the old seals and press in new ones. they are half inch seals - from memory.
it's not a difficult job, and just for once its not expensive.
on the same topic, I need a new shaft for my Volvo MD6A pump- Volvo want $130 odd for a new one, which i can make if I have the measurements.
If anyone out there has a shaft for this motor and can let me know the dimensions - i would appreciate it.
