Peter(the rigger?): Do you think that a 30' should carry the extra weight of a second stay,rarely to be used,all the time? I'd enjoy hearing your thoughts on the utility of a storm jib with a wire luff hung flying on a second prestretched halyard. Presumably, the 30' has its headstay committed to furling gear. Michael
Good point. My first idea was to do just that but the more I thought about it the more I didn't like the idea of a big series of sags in the luff of a storm jib set flying in very strong winds. Additionally there's the sail control problem while you try and hoist a jib set flying during a gale.
The stay, when not used, is detatched and clipped to the foot of the mast - no big deal in terms of weight.
