Having My own boat for sale I have of course been lokking around however "Some" have names of great meaning to thier previous owners but not to future owners..Perhaps...I am superstitious to a degree any thoughts or experiences? Good or bad...

Commercial ships can end up being renamed every few years or so. For good measure, some are painted green.

No harm done.

if you are superstitious then you must first perform a de-naming ceremony, try doing a search, there should be some posts about it on the forums

The superstition dates back too the days when a ship's name was carved into the main crossbeam. Re-naming meant carving out the old name and then carving the new name into a much thinner crossbeam. After a few too many re-naming sessions, the crossbeam snapped with the loss of many hands and resulted in the superstition that renaming would result in seriously bad luck.

Thanks for that, Stingo, I knew there was a reason for it.

Incidently, I've just renamed my fishing boat from Predator (urgh, too macho by half!) to Hilda Maud (my mother's name and a proper name for a fishing vessel).

I know a guy who bought a boat with a totally strange gaelic name and re-named it Sheila after his wife. 2 weeks later his wife left him, 3 weeks after that he won £15000 on the lottery. Today he still sails the same boat. Still called Shiela. His crew is a totally gorgeous polynesian lady 25 years younger than him and he is happy as a pig in poo..... Says re-naming the boat brought him good luck and won't ever change it......

I don't know how to do the thread link thing, but if you search the forums on 're-naming' you will find the most recent thread on it, plus links to one website that gives a ceremony if you want to do one. We added lots of other deities to it and had a good piss-up,
