I think it's a brilliant idea and I wish there were more yachties like you! We spent a season or two on the Menai straits and most of the people we met there seemed pretty good aboutothers using their moorings provided they were ready to move off again at short notice should the owner return - which is only polite, I guess! The note about the boat size would be extremely helpful - we just had to take a rough guess by the depth of water it was in and the size of the visible parts of the tackle.

I have a mooring in the straits, although due to unforeseen circumstances, my boat has not been in the water this year, but i normally stick an empty 5 litre container on to the pick up buoy with the info of how long i would be away, and when it needs to be vacated, the only problem with that is when someone uses your mooring and leaves their boat unattended on it, and when you come back you are unable to get on your mooring, you cannot contact them, so have to look for somewhere else to moor for the night, but if you have work in the morning then you have a problem, taking up someone elses mooring unarranged, or paying to put your boat somewhere, due to the fact that someone has taken advantage of your hospitality and overstayed their welcome.

although this has only happened to me twice now, once i still had a couple of days leave so went to another mooring overnight, then was able to get back to my mooring the next day, but once someone put there boat on my mooring and i had problems trying to locate the guy and ended up getting the harbour master to get it moved offa couple of week later.


The idea is good is pricipal if everyone plays the same game, but you will always get a couple of people kicking the ass out of it, and up setting the apple cart, which tends to get most mooring owners annoyed, especially if they have had to spend a couple of hundred pounds a year to keep the tackle and licenses intact, for someone to go and mooring hop just to be able to get away with not paying...
