Re: Gearbox failure, engine oil or ATF?
What type of gearbox do you have is it mechanical or hydraulic, if mechanical it should survive having engine oil in it as Volvo use the equivalent in some of their small gearboxes.
If its hydraulic then it has to be ATF as engine oil is too thick and will cause the friction plates in the clutches to slip and then the box will overheat resulting in total collapse and loss of oil, which sounds like the problem you have experienced. On the rear of the gearbox casing there should be a plate with model No etc, it will also say oil type and quantity to be used. So inexcusable really to get it wrong.Your mechanic should go back to repairing lawnmowers (the push type!)
