Mechanic? is that what you are still calling him? This is basic stuff and sounds like a typical and rather expensive shortcut was made. If you have an engine manual then look at the recommended oil. If it says ATF then that is the only stuff you should ever use. Not multigrade or anything else.

I think it will be unlikely that the gearbox will be repairable but take it to your nearest gearbox specialist and be sure and get references for whoever you take it to. Make sure the correct seals are used on the shaft as we have had an experience with a borg-warner we were working on - the seal in the service kit being to short to seal so we eventually needed 2 seals on top of each other to do the job. This job started with a stiff gearchange on the morse controls and developed into a complete gearbox seizure.

Not necessarily. My Yanmar manual is wrong. It states that my engine type has an ATF oil gearbox. It does not! My gearbox uses ordinary engine oil.
