I have just been quoted minimum charges of £55 and £60 for regalvanising a chainplate, at that price it would be cheaper to throw it away and by a shiny new bronze one.

Is this normal or are there galvanisers around (Essex area) who do small jobs at reasonable prices?

Try contacting your local small metalworker - firms that make gates, railings etc. usually send a regular load off for galvanising and in my experience are happy to add a couple of extra items to the batch. I'd expect to pay about 10-20% of what you've been quoted.

You can also reduce the cost by having a batch of your own to do. Anchor, other chainplates, stemhead fitting... a package will reduce the time taken to set up for each item. Mine cost very lttle in the end.

I have had lots of parts made to my own design over the years from Classic Marine, including chain plates. I can't recall the prices, but they were less than your quote, and that was for brand new one-off fabrications.

I persuaded someone at Acrow Saffron Walden to dip my pintles for beer money and no paperwork. Don't quote me, they might get fired.

You'll need to get it shot blasted first I think. Company in Linton did it for me - no paper trail again, but some beer vouchers changed hands.

I had 5-6 bits and I think I was about £40 lighter by the end.

As above, we looked into this and concluded that new, improved ones would be better, formed to the right shape, with bolt holes in the right places, and galvanized, to marine specification, by Classic Marine, Woodbridge. Four chain plates, a backstay tang and a massive forestay eyebolt cost just c.£150 - well worth it. We prefer to pay pubs direct for their beer!
