My 3 year old, 10mm ISO anchor chain has shed almost all evidence of zinc coating despite limited use and is now corroding and staining the hull below the chain-locker scuppers.

Does anyone know if there exists a re-galvanising service anywhere in Greece that will handle anchor chain and deliver a reasonable result?

I know of both chain and an anchor that were regalvanised separately in Greece but I do not know who did it. Both were arranged by the yards in Leros, the chain from Partheni (Agmar) and the anchor from Lakki (Evros). I assume they were done in Athens.

Where are you based , I am looking to have my chain done as well , so far I only found one place near Athens , still awaiting for a reply to my email .

I had mine done in Turkey and would not recommend it. We had at least 50 links stuck together and it took a week to clean it up and make the links move freely. It is now no longer the "calibrated" chain it used to be, so you might as well buy a locally made new non-calibrated chain.

The pallette of regalvanised chain I saw in Partheni yard looked pretty good. I examined it for stuck links and didn't find any. It is possible to buy Maggi chain via a chandlery in Greece but of course it will be a lot more expensive than regalvanising.

I had mine regalvanised 3 years ago at Aspropyrgos near Athens . For 40 meters of 10 mm I paid 80 euros. Went through gypsy first time with no probs and still going strong.

How long would you expect galvanised chain to last before re doing it? Let's say the chain is in the water for 6 month's of the year.

My new chain was bought in Corsica in 2007. Within three years it was heavily rusted, despite being end-for-ended. I then had it regalvanised in UK by BE Wedge and it still looks to be in excellent condition, no rusting and plenty of zinc remaining. Much production chain has the least amount of zinc they can get away with, whereas both chains I have had regalvanised seem to have a much thicker coat. I saw a new Maggi chain this year that looked to have a good coating but I suspect mine was by the same manufacturer and it was clearly pretty thin. So as with all the best answers - it depends!

Very fast response from Greek Galvanising (www.galvanistirio.gr ) following my enquiry today:

Dear Mr Stewart,

The cost for regalvanizing 75 metres of 10mm anchor chain is 1€/kg plus TAXES. Time needed is about 1 week.

For any further information do not hesitate to contact us at the tel: 210 555 7777

Thank you for your preference.

I will drop my chain off in 2 weeks time and will report on results
Again, my thanks to all who contributed.

Sound like a good deal. I have 60 metres to regalv and we are in Messolonghi. Are they collecting or are you piling it in the boot of a car and driving to Athens?
