The adhesive securing my toughened glass saloon windows has started to dry out (after 30 years) and leak. I have defaulted to using Sikaflex, and their website advises use of their 296 product.

This 296 isn't widely available, comes in packages for use in powered applicators, "is suitable for experienced professional users only" and 3 times the price of Sikaflex 295UV which is called Marine Window Adhesive Sealant. On the face of it, 295 UV sounds like the answer but the data sheet expressly mentions "direct glazing adhesive for plastic glass in marine applications"

I guess the question is whether anyone has fitted real glass windows, and what did they use?

I refitted mine some years ago on the deck saloon and steered away from any kind of sealant types and use butyle rubber cut to shape 12 years on they are still in good shape. As opposed to the acrylic hatches which I used all the best products from sikalflex and followed the data sheet advice

five years on they have been out again and again.

Not quite the answer you are looking for I know but I have refitted polycarbonate or acycrilic Windows directly to the fibreglass with 295UV. Nothing else worked in terms of bodging etc.
i would also very strongly advise using the pretreatment stuff prior to applying the adhesive/sealant.

yes , both are expensive but the more common 291 etc is not UV stable enough.

maybe a call to their tech car to enquire about using it with proper glass?

Do you mean glass, or alloy, or similar, frames holding the glass? I did the latter recently, using butyl tape. I suggest that you do not use an adhesive, as if you ever want them off again, you could have a problem.

296 if that is what they say on the web, glass and plastic are very different things. One major mobo builder certainly uses 296 to bond glass in but you must use the primer as well and stick to the instructions. The powered applicator gun just makes your life so much easier and allows you to get an even bead of sealant. Probably worth the investment or even hire one.

Also if you are struggling with any removal of the windows you can get a serrated cheese wire which helps with cutting through old sikaflex.
