I need some advice about re-engining my Hallberg Rassy 29. Currently has a Penta 2002 with saildrive. I wanted a Beta 20 or 25 but they won't fit as they're too long. Same with Yanmar. The only one I can find to fit is a Penta D1-20, and even then it's very tight. This engine is A good bit shorter than the Betas and Yanmar but still manages 3 cylinders. Is this a possible weakness? Anyone have experience of the Penta D1-20?

The D1-20 is based on a Japanese Perkins engine, as used in industrial equipment, and seems to be generally highly-regarded. Having 3 cylinders is a benefit in terms of smooth running.

I wonder if Penta D1-20 is really shorter or more compact as such compared to the Beta 20. Looking at the the overall length of the gearbox versions of these engines the D1-20 is actually a couple of cm longer (although it could be because of difference in the length of gearbox, don't know).
Could it be that the Beta and Yanmar get too long because of the parts needed to match them to the saildrive? Anyway, no need to worry about the Penta for being too compact, in my opinion.

A friend of mine has a D1-20 saildrive in a Bav 30 and it's excellent, very quiet and smooth and has been v reliable with 4 years pretty heavy use from UK to all round the Med. We did 100 engine hours in 2 weeks when I was with him in a particularly windless spell (ironically in the Aeolian Islands).
I have an MD2020 which the D1-20 is developed from and it is also very good, a bit higher revving and not quite as quiet (maybe because it's shaft not saildrive).
I previously had a 2002 and there is absolutely no comparison.
The engines do not have common design roots, 2002 was VP, the others are Perkins.
I expect the D1-20 is somewhat dearer than a Beta but I would not have any other reservations.

Think it is probably wise to stick to a Volvo and to replace the whole unit including saildrive. It is only Volvo and Yanmar that fit their own saildrives - the other manufacturers buy them in.

The latest 130 saildrive is much stronger, has a bigger 2 piece anode, has a different ratio to match the lower revs of the D1 20 and has a better choice of propellers and can be fitted with a rope cutter.

Think you find that Volvo buy them in now too!
