There is little to choose between different engines in terms of reliability or efficiency - or price. The choice depends on more detailed factors such as availability of options such as different size alternators, gearbox ratios, positioning of service points and ease of installation. As said Nanni has the same base as Beta in the smaller sizes and is arguably better marinised, particularly the heat exchanger.

You will find good recommendations for most of the major suppliers, so in the end your choice is what you are happy with! - Of course, colour is also important and they are all different to cater for different boat colour schemes.

I guess you have figured out that both engines are equally easy to buy, fit and maintain.

In which case fit the engine that everybody else is fitting to your class of boat. If this does not apply, I would go for Yanmar, if long pan international use is in the offing. Beta for Europe ish waters. Ignore all iffy technical claptrap.

You are going to get some very subjective replies to this question. My choice from these two would be for a BETA Marine. I am afraid that Yanmar have failed to impress over the years, both on reliability and cost of parts. Beta have excellent reliability and cost of parts is also good. A close friend of mine is a long time marine diesel fitter and his choice of engine is Beta Marine.
I agree with the recommendation to consider other choices. Ford produce some of the most reliable and easily sourced diesels, Lancing Marine, Mermaid Marine, Sabre Marine all offer excellent service and parts.

Why restrict your choice to only those two? If the Beta will fit, then a Nanni will also fit. How did you reduce your choices down to those two?
Not quite. When I re-engined my previous boat, the Beta would just fit but the Nanni would not. The Nanni was higher at the front and would have fouled the companion way steps. Suggest you make cardboard templates of all possible engines and compare profiles with your existing engine to check what will fit. More easily written than done-most dimensions are to different scales!

Our Beta has done 750 hours now with very little trouble. Starts first time, every time, very quickly. No smoke whatsoever - even when cold. When I've had problems (couldn't bleed fuel lines) their tech chaps were more than happy to talk me through it on the phone. Parts seem easily accessible and not too expensive in the UK.
