Hi, any one got an idea roughly how much it might cost to have a yard replace an old Petter Mini Twin on a 25 Ft Motor sailer with something a bit more modern, say a 25HP reconditioned or new diesel, I guess a few people will have had this done.
 
You should get at a 'Boat Show Special' a 20hp engine package for a little over £3.5 including the Vat.

Well, thats to say you will defiantly get a new Lombardini Marine LDW702M/TMC40 for £3,535.00 including Vat at the show….. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So far as fitting goes, not knowing what your local yard charges by the hour, but I would guess something along the lines of.

- 40 hours worth of labour
- materials for change of engine bearers, really not the major task most will make out it to be!
- Pay sensible consideration for replacement of exhaust, prop shaft, propeller, stern gland, control lines, fuel lines etc etc.

All as a rough guide of course..
 
Beta 25HP for about £3500 and expect to pay £1000 - £2000 to fit. Try the job yourself, as I tell most Vega owners that change their old Volvos to Betas "Changing the engine is not rocket science" Mind you one Rocket Scientist owns a Vega and he changed his engine.... Now that was rocket science!
 
Allow £5500. That is about £3400 for engine, the rest is for labour and parts. You may get it for a bit less if you can use existing shaft and prop etc. SWMBO insisted we get the yard to fit it since the extra money was worth not having to put up with me trying to do it. Plus if you get it wrong you may not hear the last of it. Seriously a few people in our club have fitted new engines themselves but it is quite a project. Lifting a heavy engine in a confined space is not easy. The vast majority pay up and seem glad they did.
 
If cost is priority and you are not up to changing the eng. yourself then remove the old one by taking it apart below - remove the oil, starter motor, water pump, generator, fly wheel in fact every thing that will come off. It should then be easy to lift the block (minus head?) out yourself. That should save a few £ and should only be a days work.

You mentioned a re-con engine. I guess we all think about that. We had a Vovlo and the rebore/re-con cost was really silly money - rapidly approaching the cost of a new engine. Even then you still have an old gearbox, an old fuel pump and a corroded exahaust manifold etc.
 
Another thought, whilst you are changing the engine you might want to consider the exhaust and prop shaft systems at the same time. They will probably of the same provenance as the engine and might need replacing very soon after.

We had all three done at the same time by the yard and the overall cost worked out as the double the base engine cost. In our case it was a Beta 37.5, boatshow cost £4k ish, overall cost £8k ish.

We wished that we had done earlier.
 
Umm - had you thought about asking Beta if they can offer you a "replacement kit" ?

I know some time ago they were offering a plug in replacement for some of the more popular engines. It might be a stretch too far to expect a Petter to be in that list, but that said, they may well have engineered one for another customer, and indeed may have even kept the drawings for it.....

Don't hold your breath, but do ask. If the front desk puts you of ask for their Technical Director.

They're a good bunch and like a challenge (occasionally)!

BTW - there must be someone somewhere who wants an old Petter - so don't destroy it without reasonable consideration first.
 
I had a yanmar YSE8 rebuilt (web, con-rod, piston, rebore) for less than £1500 including parts by a mechanic on the Rance. I think Britain has a tendency to go nuts with the prices for these things. The rebuilt engine was superb.
 
Best way to go is strip the old stuff out yourself. It's hardly worth paying £30 an hour just for the donkey work. As you only change an engine once, consider what else it may be worth changing whilst the engine is out, exhaust, goose neck, raw water strainer, anti-sysphon valve, morse control. I fitted sound insulation from "halyard" that alone cost over £120. As for the engine? Folks rave about "Beta" but I didn't a great feel for their kit or set-up, so I went for a "Yanmar" , two years later still very pleased.
