Diesel engines are much heavier than petrol and a V8 diesel would probably not so much upset the trim in a Black prince (23ft from recollection?) as sink her.

At best, you might get away with a reasonably lightweight 4 cylinder diesel giving max output of about 150hp. But them you have to match up your outdrive or replace that as well and if you replace it, the transom will need rebuilt to accommodate it.

Even if you could find a V8 diesel to fit and not make the boat too stern heavy, the cost would be astronomic. Unless the original engine is completely wrecked, my advice would be, if you want a diesel boat, sell what you have and buy one with diesels as original equipment.

Not that I am trying to put you off!

HELLLO NICK, Thanks for your reply, have taken on board what youve mentioned, but i was rather thinking about a direct replacement engine(gmc v8 6.5 190hp@3800rpm
this machine is advertised at 395 kgs marinised from samurai ltd, as apposed to my 230hp gmc mercruiser at 426kgs, this was a bit of a worry for me so hope the figures are correct!.
Also price is well within a frugal buget, thanks again,

There are a couple of companies now offering direct replacements for the Mercruiser V8. I've been speaking with MarinePower about exactly this. The engine is a direct swap, same mounts, same electric connectors. Haul the old one out and drop the new one in. Not the cheapest solution around and I wonder if it makes financial sense on a Shetland. I doubt you would see a sensible return on your investment.
Best of luck though

I would look carefully at the Samurai as I have heard of several people who have had problems with them ie. reliability and performance.

Re: not sure abut data....?

Vxisme I haven't checked the figures but they look odd. If the V8 diesel is 6.5litres then 190hp is an astonishingly low power for as high a speed as 3800rpm. Simply doesn't stack up. But 395kg is very lightweight. Sounds more like 3 or 3.5 litres displacement to me

BTW do you drive a landcruiser?

Have you considered converting to LPG? Does depend on where you are based, but the if its the South Coast then you would have more on water fueling points than petrol and it costs 32p a litre. You will lose about 10%-12% on economy, but there is no reduction in power. Cost of a single engine conversuion with about 170 litre capacity would be in the region of £3k.
