I have a 27ft Sports boat with a 5.7litre V8 petrol, boating is fun but carrying a large number of 20litre containers of unleaded isn't, so the V8 has to go. I need a diesel - so this is the winters project. The question is what & which oil burner? I spend most my time at 6knts(river) but need to get 25knts(sea) I need a good source of data/advice/experience.

I assume you have either a Volvo or Mercruiser inboard and leg. You could get a lot of helpful advice from the relevent dealer. If you want to do it yourself, don't forget its not iust a question of checking the outdrive can cope with the horsepower but normally diesel engines produce higher torque so check your outdrive is rated to take the torque. You will also probably have to change the gear ratios in your outdrive.
See if the dealer will give you a good trade in on your old engine if you go that route.
This is a more and more common choice these days so someone on here will probably have done one very simular to yours.
good luck

I did this with a rinker 250. We used a styer engine which gets about 33 knots so 25 is no prob & 5 will probably run for a year on a tankful. Get advice from Mike at lancing marine http://www.lancingmarine.com/
or get our old boat at http://www.essexboatyards.com/stocklist/boat-details.php/Rinker-250-Fiesta-Vee-1095.
She's only done few hours on engine an has everything you will ever want, I know cos I paid for it all, then eby showed me a new on of these, which i traded her in for. http://www.essexboatyards.com/stocklist/boat-details.php/Doral-Elegante-1283 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Where did, I say, where did ya get 20 litre containers from? I only ask 'cos I have to use 5 litre ones! Now THAT'S fun (not!). And which garages will let you fill them!?! The trouble I had a few weeks back, I nearly went home! Best of luck with the re-engine search.

Use Outboard fuel tanks, tempo do some at 22.5 litres. With the correct fitting and outboard fuel line without a fitting on the far end you can gravity feed into the main tank without messing with funnels etc.

Even better if you can would be to convert the fuel feed to run off either an external or the internal tank so no need to move the fuel into the main tank at all if not planning to use much....practicality depends on how much you will use in a particular trip...

Would wait til boat show and visit vaious stands, I think a yanmar/merc leg will be the cheapest of the well known makes and will give a good power to weight ratio.
The petrol leg is no good if its an alpha leg as its got the wrong ratios for a lower revving diesel and the clutch resembles that from an outboard motor.

I would go for a yamaha diesel with there own hydrdrive leg its very smooth with either duo or single prop, you may get a better deal on a single prop.
The engines are toyota based so very good.

I may be the owner of a small sea ray soon if the owner doesnt make his mind up about the job in hand at the moment as I have his seized 5 litre v8 and am thinking of converting it to diesel if it comes my way too.

Thanks for the comments, There are a number of diesel conversions out there from 100 to 260hp - but unlikly as it may be I can find little hard data & descrition of the problems/success of these efforts. Before I commit my hard cash I need to understand what I I'll be getting for my efforts

For info its a Sealine 270 running a 270hp petrol on a DP 290
leg. I would be looking for a cruise of 20 - 22knts

On the fuel can front the only problem I have had getting the petrol is they will only let me fill 2 x 20l jerry cans at a time

I have a 5.0 V8 petrol engine in my Shetland so i have every sympathy regarding filling with fuel.
I have the 20 litre metal fuel cans with the clamp on filler neck. I currently have 4 of these. Regarding petrol stations i think it really does vary from place to place. i have filled up from about half a dozen garages in Essex without trouble. Even filling 4 at a time. (tho your eyes wince at the near £80 bill)

Regarding engine choice, Lancing do a puma diesel rated at 140hp. I requested details on this one myself.

I have heard good comments on the Yamaha package (especially the leg) but i've not had prices or found the best dealer yet.

Coastal Rides have been very helpful with my V8 and they have a large number of diesel engines / packages both new and low-hour second hand ones including the Volvo D3 etc so i would certainly have them on my list of people to chat to.

I'm watching this with interest since i've been toying with the idea for some time myself.

regards,

Nick
