Re: engine mounts

I am about to install a Yanmar 1GM10, has any one any experience with non Yanmar engine mounts ? also what is the difference in size between front and rear mounts. Any help would be really appreciated !!!!
Thanks Kevin

Re: engine mounts

Welcome to the forum

The front and rear mounts are indeed different. They are very soft and allow a lot of movement primarily at tickover. I have used standard mounts since I installed mine 17 years ago and still going good. However, some report better service from more expensive composite mounts. The key to a good 1GM installation IMHO is to ensure that either the shaft can float freely in the tube or the engine is well isolated from a fixed shaft. I tried the floating first but the shaft hit the sides of the Stuart Turner tube. Next iteration was an R&D coupling and an inboard bearing in the stern tube. Latest and by far the best is a Vetus Bullflex coupling, inner bearing in tube and Volvo shaft seal. Ideal would be a Halyard aquadrive, but no space and very expensive.

Hope this helps.

Re: engine mounts

These engines do move quite a bit on their mounts so Tranoma is right in looking at isolation. One step further is to look at bearings that run tighter tolerances and more support than rubber, or an alternative to aquadrives as there are smaller and cheaper systems available tham aquadrive.

Re: engine mounts

One way is to mount the engine on a raft, two lengths of angle iron or channel, and use three, or four flexible feet per side. The further fore and aft of the engine feet the better.
