Am considering replacing my aging Vire with an 8hp overhead valve four stroke air cooled utility engine, comes with 2:1 reduction gear. Am capable do it yourselfer but would appreciate comments or suggestions on feasability, especially if you have done this. Thanks, Noel.

2 questions that I would raise. Does the Gearbox have neutral and reverse, consider the airflow required to cool this type of engine. They are normaly in the open air so putting it in an enclosed box may require a substantial fan and vent arrangement that will not allow water ingress in poor weather. Often thought about a similar thing myself so don't be put off by small things.

Make sure the 2:1 reduction gear can take propellor thrust... often industrial engines cannot take much thrust - you might have to fit a thrust bearing between the end of the gearbox and the stern gland. As before make sure the engine has enough air for combustion and the hot air can escape to keep the engine cool. It can be done with a series of baffles for air exit and inlet. Noise might be a problem, even with noise reduction sheets. Good Luck - keep us informed.

Many portable compressors powered by air cooled diesel engines have useful fan & ducting systems which not only pull in cool air but force the hot used air away from the cylinder fins. Good luck.
