hi All
My colvic was fitted with a 1500 bmc engine and a stepped box, but removed before i purchased it. do i try and find a refurbished 1500 and box or go for a different set up.

Hii,

As you are in the position to re-engine I would recommend using a different power unit. Having worked for a major hire boat company I found the bmc (1500 and 1800) units pretty unreliable. THe cams are prone to wear, they dont suffer too well if they overheat, can be a pain to bleed, etc. The company swapped them for 4cyl isuzu`s and the call outs virtually dropped to nothing. I hate to say it but the Japanese engine is much better. This is obviously only a personal opinion as no doubt there are guys out there who have had many years happy boating with bmc`s. Good luck with whatever you decide.

interesting as there are hoardes of boats powered by BMC 1500 from Freeman to a narrowboat. They just seem to go on and on such that they are still being reconditioned. I am sure that any new engine is 'better' its a question of return on investment. Consider a nice modern 1800cc Ford diesel from Lancing Marine, that wont break the bank and that'll go on forever.
