Thank you for your replies, they have been most helpful and I can now see how it works.
Checked yesterday and you are right Mirelle, both wires are the same size. I was looking at the wire halyard which of course is much lighter. Also, the bracket is indeed better described as a triangle rather than kidney. Finally the East Anglian was deemed by Alan Buchanan to be a 'cruiser - racer' which fits your description of the rigging.
Hi Horatio, my East Anglian is called 'Otty Bird', not 'Hengor'

Actually, I reckon it is a really good system. Some very experienced people like it better than headsail roller reefing gear. It's a great comfort to know that the next jib down can be set very quickly, without fighting your way through the forepeak, finding the right bag, etc., and struggling with the forehatch, whilst unlike roller reefing the sail sets perfectly and there is less windage, weight and cost.
