Re: Earlier post on stolen trailer

Hi People,
Just to let you know that the trailer has not yet been recovered but the police are not interested in a stool sample for DNA Purposes, unfortunately wrong type of DNA :(

Thank you all for your replies

Randy

wrong type of DNA ?! I am afraid that is rubbish, it is very easy to recover good quality DNA from a faecal sample. I work with the same type of DNA variations for gene mapping. Seems like a lost oportunuity to me.

Reminds me of a time a few years ago when I had a motor-bike vandalised. A policeman duly turned-up and we asked him if it was worth checking it for fingerprints. He said oh no, its very hard to get a good print, someone needs to do this .. and he proceeded to press his thumb against the tank. A few hours later a finger print team turned-up, dusted the bike and went away happy having recovered one really great print from the tank ! I never told them.

Re: Earlier post on stolen trailer

last year had nasty anonymous phone call and it was then followed by an anonymous letter, (real heavy stuff) local police called, pointed out that envelope was licky sticky and they should do dna tests. no, chief constable says its too expensive. a few weeks ago same chief constable threatened to dna test all of his police authority after an internal document was leaked and found in possesion of a reporter. i phoned local paper and said hey he's a hypocrite imho, ok for him to dna test 17 people to catch a leaker but not ok to test my envelope to catch baddy.
next day my pic on front page, headline, prominent local business man accuses cc of hypocrisy.
any way long and short of it, DI came to see me straight away and promised immediate action.
moral of the story, shout long and loud to get results

Re: Earlier post on stolen trailer

I don't know what the forensics service charge the police, but modern methodology has made DNA profiling very cheap. For normal lab work we reckon on 1-2 pounds for a DNA extraction then 0.5 pounds per variant scored. A typical DNA 'fingerprint' is based on 12 variants, total cost is thus less than 10 pounds. Presumably the forensics people have extra costs because of chain-of-custody issues but it still is a very cheap and reliable technology that is not being consistently exploited. I do know that some forces are using it more and more for minor crime and finding that, because a few people commit most of the crime, it is tying together lots of separate offences. The biggest problem seems to be the reluctance of the bobby on the beat to take it seriously and collect samples.

Re: Earlier post on stolen trailer

indeed. And if a policeman told Randy that a stool sample was no use as source of DNA for identification purposes then he was either:
1. Lying
2. Staggeringly ignorant about his profession
