Re C\'bourg trip, did you hear the story of the near sinking...

of one (nameless) forumite who had his impeller come out of it's housing and let millions of gallons of channel into the bilges?

Seemingly another forumite who was on the helm noticed that the log had ceased to work, and amazingly did nothing about it.

Then when another intelligent female crew reported that the boat was filling up with water, and urged rapid action, the two problems were realised to be related, and the impeller restored to its correct place. Seemingly the bilge pump became broken in the ensuing frantic activity and necessitated a replacement in France.

Reasons for the escape of the impeller depended on who was telling the story and varied between the owner not screwing it down, to the pin vibrating loose.

Well, at least they made the crossing, just a bit wetter than usual /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Must admit when my log ceases to work I just accept it .. its when it works that I find it an occasion to pass comment!

So I'm not surprised that P************** said nuffink to C*****

Re: Re C\'bourg trip, did you hear the story of the near sinking...

I'm glad you told us this! My log impellor often gets fouled up and I frequently ignore it, especially single-handed in crowded waters. From now on, when the log stops working, I'll nip down and make sure it's still in place. Thanks for the tip!

Apparently it was a sabotage attempt by aaargggghhhhhhhhhh

Re: Re C\'bourg trip, did you hear the story of the near sinking...

Obviously quite amusing to read of later but actually trying to find a hole or the source of a leak under water in a flooded hull is really difficult..It happened to me once a long time ago!

I have often wondered how long it would take me to realise that my hull was flooding?? By the time my floor boards are floating it would quite likely be to late to do anything about sheared off skinfittings perhaps.

I did consider the soluable asprin and the clothes peg alarm, maybe its time actually fit it !!

Most owners of composite Twisters, seeing the floorboards floating, would assume it was raining!

Difficult to see how it could come out IF it was screwed down correctly in the first place.

[/ QUOTE ]quite right. I am sure he doesnt leave any body parts loose though.

(Smug git writes))
Having just acquired a couple of spare Walker taffrail logs (still no new boat though !),coupled with my teenage experience of 'lets see how fast the impellor will go when you zap it with a powerwash',quite happy to have one less hole in the hull and prat about with stringing the taffrail(non electric) log.
And no,I have never lost an expensive spinner to a fish. But then neither have I managed to catch many fish with a spinner either !
MORE SERIOUSLY. I have decapitated the protruding head of a depthsounder which caused ingress of water and it did indeed take a while to make the connection. Good post Becky.

<Good post Becky>
erm .. you should appreciate that this post is all about the intelligence quotient of the crew from a sexist pov. that shud wipe the smug gittishness of yer chops!

jings
ratted on....
twas screwed in - just the retaining pin didnt have both securing rings in so that had to work loose first. Luckily the rubber flap helped slow the flow - I can normally change the paddle wheel for the blank with only a trickle.
Used to have to do that after every outing when in Haslar where the stagnant waters allowed it to gunk up but better in E Cowes where particulate matter in Medina flowing by four times a day keeps the wheel turning.

Re: Re C\'bourg trip, did you hear the story of the near sinking...

Quite a funny story. I cleaned mine on the way back and am now trying to remember if I replace the retaining rings!

Re: Re C\'bourg trip, did you hear the story of the near sinking...

ahoy there !!

Walker trailing log - any spare ones ? - i have a use for it ....

Walker trailing log

Are you after a complete Walker log or just spare parts? Reason I ask is that I think [subject to confirmation following a finger-tip-search in the attic!] that I might have two complete Walker logs, and could sell one.

Re: Re C\'bourg trip, did you hear the story of the near sinking...

Would comment that my log rarely works when we slip from Hamble Point Marina but normally start one 6kts clears off the growth/seaweed.

Its a warning to me as I never would look for it not being in correctly until the water was above the floorboards!!

Hmm. Don't think that situation would very often apply on my boat!
