For those interested my problem came about as the valve seats were in bad condition. The exhaust valve let goodge escape past the valve and caused a build-up of carbon on the valve stem. Eventually the valve stuck open causing the rocker arm to flap around in the breeze. The push rod came up out of touch with the rocker - it flopped to one side and on the next stroke hit the side of the casing and bent. That this engine could have run previously with what must have been really poor compression is a testament to their ruggedness and reliability. Thank you Bukh
