On our fourth outing on our newly bought mirage 28 Mk II (1980) the boom snapped in two at the junction with the main sheet fitting ...we are having great difficulty sourcing a new boom ..old one was isomast with I think an NG 1 11 gooseneck which is no longer made (lift up boom to remove it)...can a Z 204 Boom/section with a Z gooseneck be used on an isomast mast (changing the gooseneck of course) or has anyone out there any suggestions

ps have been unable to locate an owners club for mirage sail boats ..they were made by thames marine ...any other mirage owners out there who have had this problem ... the boat is based in Dublin Ireland.

Hi

http://www.sailingboatefaki.gr/index.htm

I fitted a z spars boom to my last boat, with a Proctor mast.

I made a template of the aft face of the mast out of thin ply (you could use card) and sent it of to Z spars. They produced a s/steel fitting made to my template that had to be riveted to the mast using large 'monel' rivets. I think they charged about £70 to make the fitting.
I also cut a thin piece of polythene and inserted it in between the stainless fitting and the mast, to insulate the stainless from the alloy mast. Use some "Duralac" paste to reduce galvanic corrosion.

I found the Z spar boom an excellent product, it made sail handling, esp' reefing easy work. Get a pack-a-way main cover and lazy jacks while you are at it! You'll love it.

Good luck

Dave

I found that the best way to resolve my rigging concerns on my Mirage 28, was to lose the rig overboard (not recomended). You could still source goose neck spares in 2000 forgot where from. The Snapdragon and Mirage association Tech officer gives good advice. PM for contact details

Thanks to all who have replied ..have now contacted the mirage assoc (no website yet but plans for one soon) and thanks also for link to the carefully documented site to mirage 28 efaki in greece ...at the moment we are trying to get a machinist to make up a sleeve to insert into the broken boom rather than try and alter the gooseneck, although it appears the Z spar did a good job with a bit of tweaking on a proctor mast ... ...thats todays plan anyway and will keep you up to date with developments ...it also makes us worry a bit about our isomat mast though ..which is probably the same era as the boom ..maybe best to go with last posts advice (did you mean to lose it overboard!)

Since people are so helpful can we pose one other question ...our new mirage 28 has twin mooring cleats and is kept on a drying mooring ...there is little room between bow roller and cleats f'wd and we are unsure whether to make up a mooring bridle with two loops or depend on just one loop (which won't be central) ....bow roller is quite narrow ..about 4cm ....any one else any thoughts on this ...all other boats in our club have just one central mooring cleat which is the arrangement we are used to ...
thanks all

Yes we lost the rig overboard.. it was'nt the rigging, it was the u bolts through to the chain plates. There has been more than 1 instance of this and several articles in magazines various.
