I notice the large quantity of posts mentioning engines as the number 1 problem.
Considering how reliable vehicle engines are nowadays, why is this so?
I remember the rituals trying to start the Cortina on a frosty morning...choke halfway out, pump the throttle 10 times, turn the engine over with the throttle depressed halfway and hey presto, it started...sometimes. The fella with the datsun over the road hops in and his starts straight away, (Jap rubbish, eh?). Why haven't marine engines improved at the same rate?

Most unreliable thing I've come across is a pair of Belgium yotties in Geurnsey, on the inside of us in the marina. We had agreed that we would leave at 6 and they banged on our hull at 5 saynig why weren't we up? They insisted that that when they said 6 they were talking Belgium time......

I would suggest that modern pleasure craft diesel engines are very relaible and that most problems are caused by poor installation and/or poor maintenance. Add to that the number of people who think its fine to slam from hard ahead to hard astern without any pause when they are trying to berth..... 'nuff said I think.

Sea water, neglect, old age & long periods of non-use are the main reasons why engines can be unreliable.

Loads o' boats (& their engines) are over 10 years old (mine is 35). Few cars last that long unless they are cared for. How many cars are left for 6 months of the year unused - and would they start after that?

I wondered why the general perception is that engines are unreliable. My last boat had a BMC Captain. This one a Watermota. Both are based on automotive engines dating from the 60's when car engines were not as reliable as they are today. I have never had any problem with either of them that was not my own fault. So which marine engines are unreliable?

Why are engines considered unreliable?
My boat has sails, ropes, winches, keel, rudder, anchors and an engine. Guess which one of these breaks down the most often.
