Hi,

This weekends task is to re-bed all the deck fittings I removed this winter for painting the deck.

In the past I have used stickyflex 291 which has been good, but is there anything else on the market I should be considering?

Thanks

Geocel has been good for my deck fittings, don't use sikaflex. Butyl tape is good stuff as well and has the benefit of not squeezing right out but of course doesn't squeeze into gaps so easily.

We use Sabatack 760 in the yard.
We first used it for windows but found it was just as good for other stuff as well.
Similar price as Sika but the white stays white and doesn't yellow and it's somehow nicer to work with but I can't put my finger on why.
Sabadeck is superb for teak to grp bonding and so I guess it'll be good for other oily woods.

Edit : Just read the article mentioned above by Northwind, it really is very good and provides a good deal of food for thought.

Another vote for butyl tape - no wastage as all your trimmings can be reused at later date 'cos it stays flexible - also no mucky clearing up

Unibond window frame sealant and butyl tape

Several years ago I re-bedded several wooden deck fittings and some half-round beading around the coachroof using Unibond window-frame sealant that I bought in B&Q.

It worked wonderfully well and has not deteriorated at all. It so bloody wonderful that I had a hell of a job removing the fittings last week and the half-round beading was detroyed in the process! I ended up having to cut through it with saw, and sawing through a rubbery compound that grips the blade is not so easy (although wetting the blade helps).

I'm thinking of trying butyl tape when I refit the items but I read somewhere that it tends to spread out of the joints when heated by the sun. Can anyone tell me if this is true?

Also, how easy is it to break the joint apart when you next want to remove a fitting?
