Hi
I have a Volvo penta 2003 engine and with a sea water pump. I have replaced the seals which were leaking and the reality doesn't seem to match up with the parts catalogue.

Looking at page 24 of the catalogue showing the exploded diagram of the pump there seems to be a component missing on the diagram. This is the castellated plastic spacer that separates the two new seals. I think the castellations should align with the 'air space' between the oil and the water halfs of the pump.

1) Does it matter which way around the 'castles' are? (Castles to the water side or castles to the oil side)?

2) Also, can anyone tell me the purpose of the 'o' ring (marked 15 on the diagram)? When I reassemble the pump this 'o' ring doesn't seem to meet up with anything - it just nestles against seal number 14 but is free to slide to the other seal number 14 if it wants to (through the 'air space'). (I tried to take a note of everything when I disassembled it but the 'o' ring just got lost in the mishmash!). What have I done wrong???

Thanks in advance

I believe that the O ring just sits on the shaft mid way between the two seals. I think it is there to deflect ant leakages from one seal away from the other.

I thinkyou will find there were several variations of pump fitted to these engines

this diagram I think shows the spacer you mentioned. #13 ??

other wise look at the parts lists on http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-cat-7726000.aspx

An interesting idea? If this were the case surely I would have spotted it before looking through the air gap between the oil and water halves. Does anyone know if this appears on other makes of pump??

And thanks for your diagram VicS

I think the O-ring is just there as a "slinger" in the event of leakage.

I have the 2002 and had the pump apart last week as the lip seal in the water side was leaking and found the "o" ring was on the shaft below the lip seal and did not seem to have any purpose, but reading the above with regards to stopping drips into the engine side or as a "slinger" for drips seems to make sense.

Yes. Various kits are made for most engine variants. Some use O-rings,others use nylon or similar plastic mouldings. The intention is that water leaking through the seal is thrown out to the tell-tale hole so that the operator can identify the seal failure.

I have just done the same job on my sea water pump. It's a Johnson pump but virtually identical to a Jabsco. I couldn't see the purpose of the spacer, "item 13", it wasn't wide enough, by a long way, to keep the lip seals in place. Surely the lip seals are held in place by the tight fit. As it was old and damaged it got slung! Time will tell if the seals move!
