Raytheon RL9 Scanner Motor

Hi,

Long Shot I know but has anyone got a motor out of a raytheon RL9 scanner, seems as they are over 10 years old they are no longer supported.

Tried Raymarine and got very cold shoulder.
10 years old so tough it is not supported, no help in locating old stock either. Made a very big note not to buy nav gear from them in the future.

Is the R10 the same as an RL9 scanner unit?

Just a thought.. You discount Raymarine as a future supplier, but how many other radar manufacturers provide parts for 10 year old models?

I dont know the answer, and it may be "All of them", but worth thinking about?

I regularly promise myself that I will never buy from PC World again.... but if I want something "now", I usually find myself in the store.

You may be right but it was the attitude that I didn't like, the why should we bother to help type approch, as adopted by PC world.

Is it just me or would others expect to see nav gear supported for a longer period than 10 years?

Do most people update their hardware more regularly than this and it is just me being unreasonable?
 
I think the policy is "longer than 10 years out of production", so if you buy the latest and greatest each time, it would be 10 years plus the length of the production run.

Most car manufacturers have a similar policy - it's not entirely unreasonable, and keeps the cost of the newer kit down. Still annoying when it hits you, though!
 
Not sure if if you checked the manuals or not, but they are different.

The manual for yours states the part number for the motor as 7BDRD0023.
A google search brings up suppliers....

Without wishing to pick a fight, given the rate of development of hardware, it probably is a bit unrealistic to expect product support for a 10 year old electronic device. Sitting here in my house, if I look at all the consumer electronics I have here (pc's, laptops, hi-fi's, tv's, even domestic appliances like fridges, cookers, microwaves, washing machine etc) - none of it is 10 years old. I think the oldest device I have here is the microwave at about 5-6 years old.

After 10 years - maybe the way to look at it is that things have improved so much, the failure of the scanner simply presents you with an opportunity to improve? Just my 2p worth.

Looking at it like that I suppose it is me being unreasonable.

If it was a £400 washing machine used every day then I wouldn't think twice, just hurts when it is a couple of grands worth of kit used once in a blue moon.

On a new boat it is such a small proportion of the cost that you automaticaly specify it but on a 15 year old boat that you expect to trade up from the cost just seems disproportional to use and value of the vessel.

on the plus side I suppose the onset of digital may throw up a few second hand bargains.
