I have a number of C-Map (S+) standard NT charts in my plotter which show port details down to a scale of 1/2nm or 1/4nm. Over the weekend I removed the charts from the plotter (just to check their names) but when I put them back in to the plotter, the smallest scale of chart that the plotter would show was 6nm. I tried switching the plotter off and on again but still the same thing
Anyone know what I've done wrong?

I have had a similar problem before. They may not be seated properly, try and give them a wiggle! If you turn on chart boundaries in the set-up, then zoom out to 300 or 600 miles to get an overview then you can "see" what charts are being being picked up from the cartridges. If they are not showing any detailed bounderies then it has not "seen" the cartridge. I hope that makes sense!!

6nm sounds like the background map loaded into the plotter, which means the CMap charts are not being read at all from the cartridge chips. In which case it could be bad contacts - mebbe try cleaning em and bending the contacts inside the plotter so they press harder onto the chip?

Or (and I'm clutching straws here) the Raymarine software/firmware has various functions that switch on/off at 6nm range. Eg acquisition of radar targets using Raymarine's MARPA is not possible after 6nm range. Therefore, is it possible you have some functions selected that are incompatible with <6nm range, and as a result the plotter refuses to zoom in any further? In which case you need to deselect the offending functions? This could be bolx, I'm guessing

yes, i like the bad contact idea. These are low voltage so the contacts are often a bit rubbish. But i don't much like the idea of too much pressing and bending things inside the unit...

On some setups they only reset when the whole lot is totally and utterly switched off, somehow, praps the gps thing from somewhere else. So, switch some more things off and praps a fuse or two as well. Then the next day, switch them all on again and swear at them a lot, which usually works. In the computer world, they (alright, i) would tell you to switch it off and wait 10 minutes for it to sortof forget everything (and get you off the phone)

My own personal method when dealing with recalcitrant electronic objects is to press all of the buttons in a random and vigorous manner thus teaching the said object who is the boss of this particular situation. This worked with the Navtex but, unfortunately, not with the plotter
However, the idea of bending the cartidges a bit and pressing them in a bit harder definitely fits with my view of how inanimate machines should be treated and I shall certainly be trying this on my next visit to the boat

I wd i have a quick shuftie of exactly which up the chip things go unles they are of the type that only go in one way. Then detail the 12 year old to sort it out and hurry up about it. The resort to your plan A for a while, now also in a position to blame someone else for failing miserably. Finally I wd almost certainly bustify the thing, which removes the headache entirely.

Have you managed to get anything useful out of the navtext other than the weather forecast for a long time ago somewhere else, or the reassuring message "no message" ?

Navtex

Yup, had major panic when I initially switched on Navtex to see F7-8 forecast for Cabreras and Balearas but eventually realised forecast was dated 3 weeks ago. Started to get current weather forecasts after about 24hrs of being switched on but took a while to twig date/time code like 05020142UTC means forecast issued at 01.42 UTC on 2nd May. But you do need to go thru the menus deleting types of info you dont want to get and stations you dont want to receive from otherwise you get loads of useless info. If I could find a way of switching bloody beeping sound off that it makes every time it receives a message, I'd be delerious

Re: Navtex

Why not PM Milltech, he knows a thingy or two about NASA settings, has helped me out to great effect, he knows a few of the ahem 'short cuts' with nasa kit.
