As above...The instructions say to attach the red wire to battery +, black to battery -ve and the outer shied bare wire to earth. Should I attach it to the battery -ve or attach it to nothing? Thanks as usual Nik

In the absence of a ground plane, attachto the battery negative.
 
From the Raymarine Masthead Wind Transducer Test document:

Red to shield should read 8V DC steady. This is the masthead power supply, coming from the ST50/ST60 display head. If the head is damaged, you may need to provide this power from another source to test the masthead.​

So there certainly should be zero potential between the shield and battery negative.
