Had a Raymarine rep visit with their new 15in VGA screen today. Lovely bit of kit, very bright and viewable in direct sunlight. It's much too big for my boat (I am looking at it for a work application) and definitely for the mega yacht. Has built in speakers and inputs for VGA and digital video

But... Power consumption is 60W and price is £3,770!

I can buy a Sony 15in flat screen VGA monitor for £200 ish.

Most mega-yacht owners or skippers wouldn't think twice about 3770 GBP. Berthing costs in the places that mega-yachts live are this much per month. In Monte Carlo they probably exceed that on flowers to surround the passarelles. And as for 60W - they have huge generator power, even on relatively small (20 metre) such yachts. How else will they drive all the A/C, water-makers, big radar, massive sound systems, communications equipment?

True of course Vyv (and I should have clarified that it was XVGA resolution) - this is small change on mega-yachts. However, 60W implies use of cold-cathode backlighting which is highly inefficient. This seemed to be confirmed by the depth of the display, though the rep didn't know much. State of the art backlighting uses LEDs which would have reduced the power to around the 10W mark for equivalent brightness.

Different league! I'll retreat back to my low-res, low-power and low-cost cabin and marvel at the wasteful extravagence of the wealthy...
