Sometimes it shows --- and sometimes 000 when there is real depth there. I have noticed it happening in mainly bouncy conditions and it eventrually returns to normal. Is this an indication of soemthing about to go wrong ?
Thanks.

I have a ST 40 fitted to one of our club rescue ribs and it did the same thing. I solved the problem by "adjusting" the frequency that it records at? If you check the manual you will see a way of getting into the programme and you can adjust the time delay at which the unit works. I can't remember exactly what I did now but basically you can ask it to "update" every second or every 10 seconds or multiples in between.
Sorry if the explanation is a little vague but go check the manual and it should point you in the right direction.

You say 'bouncy conditions'. If the transducer is breaking the surface or even getting some aerated water under it then you will certainly get the symptoms you describe. If the transducer is not 'through hull' then possibly a move slightly further aft might cure it. In any case I would also check all connections etc as usual just to make sure.

Good luck.

ST40

I had exactly the same problem with my ST40 a few weeks ago. I had a dodgy domestic system battery where the voltage was dropping after I'd been sailing for a few hours - but not to the extent where the depth gauge should stop working.
Someone here suggested there may also be dirty contacts in the circuit to drop the voltage further.
Replaced both the battery and also cleaned all contacts to the gauge and it has worked perfectly for the last 2 weeks. Don't know which action cured it but one of them certainly did!

Probably irrelevant, but the depth on my ST60 tridata always works fine in the water but never shows depth when the boat is out of the water. Is it meant to be like this? Or is it possible that there is a minimum depth it can measure?
Thanks
