The innard mechanicals of mine were replaced a few months ago under warranty. Over the weekend, it packed in electrically, letting out a high pitched whine whenever 12volts was applied. It seems to me that the unit wasnt correctly sealed last time it was in for repair. Now I can forgive Pipedream for the challenges she throws at me, she is 30+ yrs old BUT, I dont expect relatively expensive gear, especially with a Raymarine badge on it, to NOT do what it says it will, on the tin. Anyone from Raymarine care to comment ????????????????????. Very very /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif at this.

Was it Raymarine Tech at Portsmouth or a local agent? I have found that the quality of service ( and repair prices) vary quite widely among the authorised agents. However, the Portsmouth guys have done me proud on the two occasions I have used them. Re sealing, as far as I am aware, there is just the rubber gasket between the two casing shells and I guess there must be some kind of O ring when the ram goes in. Whatever it must be a case of return to mender!

I had a st1000 on my beneteau and that failed due to water ingress. The rubber cover over the switches is only bonded in with sikaflex? Take it apart and have a look. Not very impressive. I also had a Simrad tp10 wich was much more robust.

My C120 has gone for repair, bought it second hand, at one year old, when I bought the boat. It had been fitted previously internally, we have it in the cockpit now but it is removed at the end of each day and kept below.
Due to upgrades/repairs we were out of the water until August this year and the plotter was kept at home, warm and dry. We covered around 350 miles during the summer hols, mostly in the sunshine but had one trip past Margate en route Ramsgate where it was a little choppy and consequently a bit of water flying about (but not so much as you'd notice). Two days later as we were leaving Ramsgate Marina, heading home to Ipswich the C120 gave up the ghost. Once home I unplugged it to find the connection pins at rear corroded, in fact one of the pins on the radar connections was completely gone!

Apparently water had got right inside the casing and destroyed a PCB in there, it had also got in the front too and damaged a ribbon that connects the buttons on the front. Total cost (estimate) so far £250 + VAT + labour.

As you might expect, the warranty ran out a week or so earlier. So far I'm not too impressed with Raymarine stuff if it can damage so easily in a marine environment to which it is intended. Pin corrosion I can understand perhaps but water entering the housing so easily I find hard to swallow.

If the C120 can't be repaired I might go for Standard Horizon as a replacement.

Sorry gents, I should have explained that I checked the 12v connection to the unit and it was fine. It has gone back to xxxxxxxx who repaired the mechanicals and therefore broke the seal last time ( I will name and shame depending upon their repsonse - I believe that service is best shown when there are problems to be solved, not when there are impending sales to be made).

Beginning to believe that grumpy old men may indeed have a point !
