We've a problem with our Raymarine ST 4000+ Autohelm

On a long trip today, the motor stopped working. The instrument displays as normal but the motor does nothing.

We're presently on the pontoon at Dale during a cruise. We've dismantled what we can with limited tools, and discovered that -

1. The motor spins in both directions when 12 volts is applied directly across the terminals.

2. The 2 pin plug connection from the instrument display head to the motor delivers just 4.5 volts when the Auto is engaged, not 12 volts.

3. As we dismantled the motor unit, we managed to break the two connectors, but this can be fixed with tools (soldering iron etc.) we don't presently have on board.
Can't see this relating to the problem, probably just being hamfisted!

Looks like manual helming for the remainder of our cruise, unless anyone can come up with a quick solution.
Alternatively, what's the longer term approach to solving this issue.

Thanks in advance everyone

Mike

If it helps, I have a pdf of the ST4000+ service manual, which includes some diagnostic info. If you'd like a copy, PM me with your email address.

I presume you mean Dale, Pembrokeshire? If your cruise was going to include visiting Ireland I could lend you a ST4000+ ram for the duration of the remainder of your cruise? Don't expect that's of any help but the offers there anyway!

It would appear item 2 is the cause of the problem. The operating voltage of the ram is 12v (as confirmed by the technical manual you have [thanks :encouragement:] showing the test with 12v battery).

Not sure why it should be 4.5v but if there is no obvious wiring problem you could just renew it as it could be internally corroded.

FYI a forumite has an excess of ST4000 ram motors and was recently selling them and you may think it wise to get a spare for not much money at all
