Hi There,
has anyone managed to get the wheelpilot to read the NMEA sentence from a NASA windvane.
The windvane is outputting ok.
Tried connecting it to the 6002 head unit and the main course computer to no avail.

Regards
Roy

IIRC the S1 is expecting the Raymarine standard from the vane rather than NMEA. IIRC there is a place on the computer to plug in NMEA - have you tried that.

Ah!!!.
Yep tried plugging the vane into th ecomputer and still no joy.
the 6002 has a seatalk and NMEA input, and according to the manuals will accept any NMEA device....well except nasa windvanes :-)

Will contact Raymarine and NASA see if they can shed light on the problem.

Cheers
Roy

The nasa wind vane gives out nmea 0183 at 4800 baud and the sentence is MWV. The output is reference to the negative supply. If your wheelpilot's input is not reference to negative you might have to link the reference input (perhaps labeled nmea-) to supply negative.

Hi Hubertfairweather,
yep, linked the nmea- still no joy....but thanks for the thought
i know the vane is outputting clearly, hooked up pc and watched a nice continous output of MWV sentences.
Just the wheelpilot doesn't "see them" or "listen to them"
emailed raymarine last night but no reply yet.
regards
Roy

The nmea output of the nasa compas goes from 0 to 5volt and can only source about 2mA which is too low for the opto issolators in some instruments. You can overcome this problem by connecting a 4K7 resistor between the output and +12 volt supply. This has worked for me on a couple of occasions..
If you get the sentence right and the voltage level right then it must work.
Hubert.

Hi there - I got this all working last night. My setup is feeding the NMEA output form the NASA into a NMEA multiplexer at 4800 where it is combined with AIS and position data and sent to my C80 plotter at 38000. This works no problem and wind data displays on the C80. The C80 then sends the wind data via Seatalk to the S1 which will now activate the steer to wind setting.

When I get back to the boat tonight I will try feeding the NMEA directly into the S1 NMEA input for you and let you know if that works too.

Do you have a Raymarine plotter you can use to convert your NMEA to Seatalk for the S1?

Steve

Hi Steve,
No i have lowrance plotter.
Raymarine have got back to me today and told me the sentence is giving a wrong checksum so the S1 is ignoring it. Passed this onto NASA and they have emailed me back saying they are investigating further.
all very interesting, but it is like going back 20 years in IT were HP wouldn't talk to IBM who would talk to Compaq etc, etc.
if you manage to hook direct into the 6002 let me know.
Will probably have a look at Huberts response if NASA don't get back to me at weekend.
Cheers
Roy

I have just used the Raymarine NMEA multiplexer to input to the Wheelpilot.
I have the ST4000, and had no joy until I used the multiplexer.I now have the GPS and the Navman Wind instrument inputting to the ST.
I used the GPS for connections 1a and 1b and the Wind input on connection 2a and 2b.
This is important as it reads the inputs on a decreasing period basis from inputs 1 to 4.
It works on Windvane mode well so far, although only used in quiet weather.
