Raymarine RL80CLC colour GPS radar/plotter

Re: Raymarine RL80CLC colour GPS radar/plotter

I have an RL80c 10" plotter inside. I was told that with the RL series one cannot have a "repeater" unit on the fly it must be another stand alone unit into which one has to put the C-Map cartridge?

Hi Clive

It depends upon the age of the RL80CRC unit.
All of them will allow you to have a two station setup like Grahams.
You just connect the hsb buss between them and the data gets shared amongst both stations (GPS, Plotter and Radar).
The later ones (RL80CRC Plus units) have the newer hsb2 buss which allows more than two units in the same system.

Incidently, when we were using yours earlier in the year, the little ship icon/ident was pointing the wrong way - apparently motoring backwards - I found an FAQ the other day on the Raymarine site that should fix this.

The scanner isn't the most expensive part of a system upgrade, so I'm not too sure where you're coming from on this one. The most expensive part of the upgrade will be the display: if it were me I would get the latest DGPS receiver and either an RD218 or RD424 scanner to get the best overall result from the upgrade.

Re-using old bits only goes so far, and I don't think that's unreasonable.

Re: Raymarine RL80CLC colour GPS radar/plotter

I've got 4 of the *uggers - dont particularly want to leave holes in the dash or leave redundant equipment in place.
Also need to take carefull consideration with the sonar which is fed from a digital sound processor connected to one of the RL70C units. The sonar transducer also contains the log.

Just changing the displays isnt the complete answer.
Last time I looked the 4kw scanners were a good £1200 and I'd probably take the opportunity of upgrading to an open array.

Re: Raymarine RL80CLC colour GPS radar/plotter

Hmmm.

Whatever you do it's going to be expensive. What I can say is that the E-Series displays are very good in bright sunlight, mainly because of the raw power of the backlight. But don't let a 2 year old put her shoes on the anti static coating, or it might get a bit scratched, so I've heard.

Re: Raymarine RL80CLC colour GPS radar/plotter

Chaps, why change or upgrade anything? If you've got a HSB2 network of displays, plotter and radar that works, why not just leave it alone? Get a new setup when you next change your boat. Either C/E series or Garmin Network. A network is an integral part of the boat, change the lot or change nothing. C-MAP NT isn't going away and will be supported for years. To heck with the marketing. If it works don't touch it! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Raymarine RL80CLC colour GPS radar/plotter

The conversation started with us moaning about how dim and unstable the old displays are.
But, like you say, we will keep with the old kit for the moment.
Would love to find a way of brightening them though.

Re: Raymarine RL80CLC colour GPS radar/plotter

OK Comprendee! I wonder if the later editions of RL70CRC and RL80CRCs were brighter than the earlier ones. We replaced one and the new one is fantastically bright, brighter than our new Garmin 2106, and as bright as the Garmin 276C. (Installed in Cockpit)
