Ok like most old above radio , the handset wire has fell in bits , I have done a repair with shrink sleeve all good ,but I still struggle with the sound on the flybridge.it’s an old system on sea talk .
Now I only steer from the fly, so I am thinking of retro fitting a freestanding unit with built in speaker and it’s own aril does this sound feasible . Thanks for replies.SS

It all comes down to wiring runs or conduits. If you can (i) run 12v from a spare circuit on distribution board on the deck below, (ii) run NMEA GPS information to the new radio from nearby nav gear, and (iii) run coax to wherever the antenna will go, then it's 100% feasible. Otherwise you have some challenges to work around.

Old school use to be take power supply direct from battery. But I doubt if any do now.
It may be worth trying a waterproof car audio speaker in place of current speaker.

NMEA is used to get GPS information to and/or from the VHF for DSC. If you have an old Seatalk system it's likely Seatalk is providing the GPS (if at all). I would replace it with an Icom 423GE or similar which has it's own GPS antenna.

Hi , I don’t think you can replace a raymarine with a standard speaker.

I have a Raymarine 230e 2 station kit kicking around somewhere with one of raymarine's active speakers and the 'black box'. One handset is faulty, the other is fine. Both I fitted new flex to the handsets. Not sure if any of that gear is of use or not..
