If using RJ45 connectors to join 8 core + GND Raymarine radar data cables can the the grounds be snipped off?

Thank Dunx. I thought that was the case but was unclear has to how the the continuity of shielding was actually achieved when using an RJ45 connector. I had been told that the wire could be looped around some of the other wires or just snipped off but apparently, the best way, is to use copper foil tape over the shielding wire and crimp the cable grip over it. Presumably, to avoid the tape adhesive isolating the shield, you have to go around the cable twice to ‘sandwich’ the shield.

Are you using shielded RJ45 plugs with the metal covers? They probably aren’t designed for harsh environments like radar though, with damp salty air.
There are some massive modular RJ45 connectors available described as military grade that might cope with life up a mast.

Yes, metal ones but inside a plastic, waterproof Ethernet RJ45 Coupler and above the headlining of the front cabin rather than outside the hull so hopefully not too exposed. I am not sure that it is military grade but it is fat….
