Raymarine price changes- April 6th

[ QUOTE ]

To be fair on Raymarine, the turbulence in Global Currency Markets has caused all of the major marine electronics manufacturers to revise their UK price lists. Raymarine are probably the last.

Why would a British manufacturer need to revise their UK list price because of currency fluctuations /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

And before anyone jumps in - yes I know Raymarine kit is built in Hungary.
27 March 08 - 327.7 HUF = 1 GBP
27 March 09 - 324.0 HUF = 1 GBP
Seems pretty stable to me - fluctuation of less than 1%

Interesting.
Although, according to their annual accounts, material purchases are in US$, payments to Flextronics are also in US$.

Income is provided from a combination of US$, GP£ and €'s

So, I guess, it gets complex.

Leaving aside that they arent a British manufacturer (is there such an animal these days?) its always been a business motto that a cost is a fact, but a price is a decision. Since the punter is expecting a price increase and everyone else has made one, Raymarine would be daft not to join in. They cant afford to give any money away in these makrets

The Investors Chronicle describes Raymarine's shares as "an option on survival" and points to a 430% debt to equity ratio. It will be interesting to see if they make it.

I have just read the BOE pension fund has put 70% of it's funds into index linked government securities. If true it is a bit like betting against them selves!

The Government has just devalued the pound(Quantitative easing my eye), call a spade a spade. The point is that with the currency falling out of bed most consumer products are going to rise there is very little fat left and many manufacturers/retailers will be unable to absorb the cost increases particularly with the drop in turnover.

We can expect all of our standards of living to drop and prices are going to rise. The trick will be for the Government to keep interest rates low whilst inflation is rising otherwise we will see re-possessions like never before and huge unemployment, although you could argue that very few people in this country had real jobs in the first place.

I don't blame Raymarine at all, it is inevitable and necessary for survival. What I want to see is a fall in business rates as rental values fall, I wonder if it will be allowed to happen?

I couldn't agree more with Tosca. It's worth remembering that there are still electronics manufacturers left in the uk. EchoPilot and Nasa to name but two. I have just picked up a copy of nasa's 2009 catalogue and prices are still the same as last year so price rises are not inevitable.

I think Flextronics are their sole manufacturer now. Places in Mexico and Eastern Europe if I remember right. The contract was obviously not fixed price........

If indeed these two do assemble in the UK (I'm not convinced) the electronic components they use will be made overseas as will the plastics for the cases. Their costs will be rising thanks to the pound, so if they are not increasing prices they must be desperate for volume.
