raymarine pilot problem

ST4000+ pilot that will auto tack to starboard when you press the +1,+10 buttons together but not to port even though the port buttons work fine individually. Then on another occasion it reverses and the auto tack will work to port but not starboard.

The installation looks clean and tidy - no signs of water ingress or damage in any way.

Ideas?

Is it sensitive to the angle to the wind that the pilot already thinks you are at? (Not that this is something that I have encountered myself.) Just that whether you are sailing to compass or wind is another possible distinction that you have not mentioned.
