I am trying to get a GPS position from a Raymarine System (400 G course computer , RL 70 C Plotter , ST 60 Displays connected by Sea Talk ) to a Nasa AIS Radar unit.
Have tried connecting to the NMEA out on the 400 G but nothing is picked up on the AIS.
AIS picks up a signal no problem from a handheld Garmin 12.
Are there any settings I need to alter on the Raymarine System to make them talk ?

Suggestions please

According to the 400G handbook you would need to be connected to the NMEA output #2. Please see below:

Course computer NMEA 1 output*
NMEA 0183 transmitted Information sent
HDM heading
* Note: Type 150G and Type 400G course computers provide fast heading
(HDM) output from NMEA 1 at 10 Hz 0.1° resolution. This fast heading data is
suitable for use with the MARPA function on radar equipment.
Course computer NMEA 2 output
NMEA 0183 transmitted Information sent (* if available)
BWC bearing to waypoint*, distance to waypoint*,
waypoint number*, time*
GLL latitude/longitude*, time*
HDG
HDM
HDT
heading
VTG course over ground* (COG), speed over ground*
(SOG)
* Note: The course computer will only transmit these items if it has received the
appropriate data.
Course computer NMEA 1 and 2 inputs
NMEA 0183 received Information extracted

So, from the above: NMEA o/p#1 only had heading information but #2 has the GLL sentence as well as other stuff. But of course it wiull only output this info if it is receiveing it!!!!

There are two NMEA outputs on the 400G computer. You need to connect to NMEA2 - there's no positional data output on NMEA1.

The nasa AIS Radar needs to get position on NMEA 0183. The sentence required is RMC. The input is reference to supply negative. The signal needs to go above 2volt for a logic one and below 2volt for a logic zero.

There you go then, Hubertfairweather has cracked it. The NASA wants the NMEA RMC sentence and the 400G only sends the NMEA GLL sentence.

You could try checking if the RL70C outputs RMC and try picking up the feed from the RL70C directly.

I think the problem might be the NMEA "sentence".
The 400 G does not have RMC on it's No 2 NMEA out as mentioned above. So if I tap into the RL70C it might work.
Where do I connect as all the sockets are used with Sea Talk etc ? Could I try the back of the ST60 Multi ?

Have a look at the Raymarine web site:

http://www.raymarine.co.uk/customer-support/owners-manuals/radar-manuals/retired-radar-manuals/

In particular chapter 7.9, 8 and appendix F.

There is an NMEA out connector near the HSB2 connector; you may need to set up the NMEA sentences to be transmitted in the set-up menu, see chapter 7.9.

The GMC sentence is available. There is an NMEA cable available from Raymarine with the appropriate connector if you don't have one.
