Raymarine NJRC Magnetron Replacement?

Raymarine 2KW pre-digital radar.
How do you know if the Magnetron needs replacing in a radar?
Our radar produces a lot of noise on the plotter display but not much detail of anything irrespective of settings. Could it be the Magnetron needs replacing?

I had a similar problem with a late model Pathfinder radar, sent it away to Raymarine who then advised the spare parts were no longer available . IIRC it was the HF unit that had gone rather than the magnetron.
