.........I have just inherited this chartplotter which seems very good, however Raymarine have 2 apps, RayViewer and RayRemote , for the life of me I cannot get to work with any device. The chartplotter is running Navionics through an SD card, do I need to download a Navionics App?

Yes, download the app, ray viewer is the easiest to use, which gives you a copy of the plotter screen.
On the plotter set up the WiFi.
Connect your phone/tablet to the plotter WiFi.
Open the app & off you go.
