I have a Raymarine 230e VHF with a handset at the chart table and a handset at the helm. If the handset at the chart table (handset 1)is not seated properly in the cradle I cannot change channels on the handset at the helm as the handset 1 has priority. I have fiddled with the handset within the cradle but cannot work out the best position for it to be in to be detected.

How does the Raymarine "know" that the handset is back in its cradle. Is it a magnet somewhere? What can I do to make always "know" that the handset is indeed back in place?

Thanks

There is a "reed relay" of the kind ORD-213 on the back of the handset which is activated by a small magnet on the cradle: that's all.
First check you can do is try if you succeed in activating it with another stronger magnet; with age reed relays tend to be less sensitive. Notice that a new reed relay will cost at most one pound and substituting it is pretty simple.
