I'm having a problem getting any depth info on my Raymarine ST40 bidata. It will 'cycle' through 'depth','log', 'water temp'.......but nothing shows on 'depth'. I also have a C120w plotter which works in 'depth' and 'fish finder' mode.
Our local Raymarine guy came down to look at it over winter and told us the ST40 wasn't connected to the C120. He put in an extra cable and we now have 'log' info on the C120..... but still no depth info on the ST40.

If that's the case, then could it be that your ST40 is expecting to read depth data from a directly-connected transducer? Is it as simple as that transducer's packed up? (Have you checked the connections on the back of the ST40?)

I havnt check the connections on the back of the ST40, I suspect that it doesn't have a dedicated transducer, and I have never ( ever) managed to get any 'depth' info from it. The local Raymarine agent checked it over the winter ( when I wasn't there and the boat was out of the water) and said it needed a cable between the ST40 and the C120 which he fitted. Now the boat is back in the water.......and I now get 'log' readings on the C120, but still no depth info on the St40.
I've no idea if he fitted the wrong cable, or doesn't quite 'understand' the problem!......I appreciate I need to go back to him, but was just wondering if anyone else had experienced a similar problem.....so I can point him in the 'right' direction.

I'm assuming that this is an older ST40 with the lcd display? If so, it is intended for use with it's own transducer. I'm guessing your guy has added a Seatalk 1 cable from the ST40 to the C120W so that it can broadcast log/depth data to the C120W. However if the depth transducer's not working in the first place then all you would get is log data.

You could prove this by powering off the fishfinder. If you still get depth data on the C120W then you have a fault with your ST40. (I think this is unlikely). If you find that powering off the fishfinder also removes the depth display from the C120W, then I think you have a transducer fault (or connection fault to the transducer). I'd start with the connections on the back of the ST40.

Good luck. Let us know how you get on.
