Raymarine e7 / Icom M506 compatibility ?

Hi,

To simplify the wiring for Sunrunner's new instrument setup I'm thinking of installing an Icom M506 VHF with AIS. The M506 has NMEA2000 connectivity which is readily connected to Raymarines STng via a cable adapter. I just wondered if anyone has tried out or seen this combo work at a show etc and what the compatibility is like between this VHF and the e7 ?

Or I could just wait for the Ray70 VHF later this year but that is likely to be a wallet-emptying experience and I would really prefer to get the installation over with sooner rather than later.

Doe that mean nobody's tried this combo ? How about an e7 with a Lowrance Link 8 ?

I'm sorry but I have no experience of these radios but my e7 is connected to an ancient Skanti DSC radio just to give it the position and works fine.
 
In theory there should not be a problem because the Icom, like all AIS equipment will send the standard N2k pgns - equivalent to Nmea 0183 !AIVDM and !AIVDO which the E7 and any other AIS capable displays, plotters etc will recognise.
 
Recently replaced the electronics on a friends boat. Icom M506, Raymarine C95 and two I70's.
The Icom integrated easily. No issues. AIS repeats on the Raymarine electronics no problem.

Was the AIS connected to the Raymarines via STng/NMEA-2000? Reason I ask is the manual I have for the e7 mentions AIS compatibility through NMEA-0183 and STng, but there is no mention of this under the NMEA-2000 sentences list. Also, in the guide on how to connect devices, it states third-party AIS should be connected via NMEA-0183.

STNG is the same as N2k as far as NMEA compatibility goes, its mainly the different connectors for which an adaptor cable is available, apart from any Raymarine proprietary pgns which may be needed for some of the functionality of their own devices. These won't affect the display of the AIS display.

If Raymarine's AIS receiver/transceivers are N2K compliant, then the E7 must surely also work with other manufacturers AIS products as well.

It seems to me that Raymarine are trying to encourage the use of their own products by implying other manufacturers products won't/don't work as well.
