Whilst at anchor yesterday I put the sun cover over my E120 without switching it off - when we left I removed the cover but the screen was very dim. I assumed that by putting the cover on I'd made it think it was dark and it had gone into low level light mode and that after removing the cover and a few minutes in direct sunlight it would have reverted back to daylight mode. However, it remained dim for the entire 45min journey home. I turned it off and on a couple of times but it remained in dim mode. I'll need to look at the manual but thought I'd post here first in case anyone else had had a similar experience.

Thanks for any feedback.

It does not auto dim as far as i know.

If you push the power button once it enters brightness mode.

Then as i recall you rotate the wheel to the right of the display which increases the brightness.

There is also a suggestion here that it an go into night mode ( which until i googled i did not know it had!)

Did you try adjusting the brightness afterwards by pressing the power button?

The CCFL driver can overheat and fail - a common issue with these.

A bit of a stretched coincidence but could it be that the cover has itself pressed the power button sufficiently to put it into brightness adjustment mode and the cover has also pressed the cursor that would lower the brightness scale, or possibly the cover has pressed another random combination of buttons to achieve the same effect. In other words, have you tried adjusting the brightness upwards in the normal way? I don't think that the E120 has an ambient light sensor.

Thank you all for your comments - I didn't have time to have a play with the unit when we got back to the marina as we had to leave for home quickly but I grabbed the manual with a view to having a look before we go down again next weekend. It does seem likely though that the cover (or probably me) had pressed something inadvertently without realising.
Thanks again,

Similar thing happened to me (on a A67,not E120): whilst putting on the cover, pressure was put on the on/off button which is also used to bring up the brightness menu. I'd check the brightness next time you're on the boat.

A quick update on this - Unfortunately it wasn't operator error. The back lighting has gone on the display. Raymarine say it can be repaired but it'll cost £350. Cheaper than a new CP I know but still a bummer!!
Boats eh??

May be worth trying this crowd: http://www.theservicecentre.eu/Marine Electronic Service MAN.htm
They managed to repair my old Cetrek autohelm. Not massively cheap, but may be less than RM are charging.

EDIT: Too slow!
