Having problems with new Navionics XL3 (wider area) chips in my 10yr old E120/E80 plotters. They keep freezing when changing range etc - appears to be data overload. Can reboot and then often OK but E80 often needs 5 attempts.

I understand that I can update software using internet.

I am currently in Morbihan and have WiFi access (not particularly fast.

Excuse a techphobes questions but I assume I need a new fairly large size CF card and a CF card reader with a USB connection to plug into my dell.

Can anyone give me an idiots guide as to how to update software on each machine.

is it the same software for both?

We had to update ours recently. There are instructions on the Raymarine support site. But from what I recall, you actually need a very small CF card. Even then it seems a bit hit and miss. We borrowed a 256mb iirc from a chap of this parish who used it to update his e120 - same age, on same boat - but despite numerous attempts, my E120 refused to 'see' it. Ended up getting the yard to do it. Didn't solve the problem though so still contemplating the prospect of a £6k bill to upgrade (incl. digi radar) :-(

Recently upgraded the software on our E80. Be aware that you do need a small CF card (128mb springs to mind) as the unit will not read large cards.

Had the same problem with a E80. After upgrade the problem was gone. You do need a empty CompactFlash card for it with a max capacity of 512MB as the update-program in the plotter does not support bigger cards (the normal software does by the way). Format the CF card using the old FAT-16 logic (so NOT FAT-32) using a CF card reader and some Windows computer. After format store the upgrade program on the card, do not create a sub-directory.
Switch off the plotter, place card and switch on the plotter. It should automatically upgrade the software.
You can find the software here: http://www.raymarine.com/knowledgebase/index.cfm?view=3753

Be prepared to loose all the configuration and waypoints etc stored in the plotter. Make a note of the current configuration before upgrading, especially about the system integration settings.

Good luck,
A.

I recently updated 2 C70 plotters, had no problem at all doing it. Detailed instructions on Raymarine website http://www.raymarine.co.uk/knowledgebase/index.cfm?view=3776
I actually used the old 256Mb chart CF card to do it with the chart still on it (which they tell you not to do!), temporarily hiding the chart files in a sub directory, the update file is very small. I removed the update file and did away with the sub directory afterwards and the chart was still usable.
Subsequently updated the chart to latest European one.
The C70 now runs horrifically slowly, redrawing after zooming takes an age. I put this down to the hugely increased size of the chart file, not the software update.
Particularly disturbing is that the boat position refresh and the chart refresh are not synchronised so for a few seconds at a time the boat position shown can be grossly wrong.
Ditto AIS echoes.
You can also have a situation where you are trying to position the cursor on something and the something keeps jumping on the screen. Frustrating.
Vastly inferior to the Garmin 750 I had on previous boat :-(

PS yes same software for your two plotters at http://www.raymarine.co.uk/view/?id=3753

Managed to buy a CF card (but 4GB) and card reader only to find SWMBO has 3 CF card readers in her EOS camera box!!

Downloaded update and read instructions including have a small capacity chip. Phoned Raymarine helpline who said try it. E120 will either recognise chip or not. It did and updated but tried updating remote E80 and no go. It starts but has blanks for serial number which I assume it would automatically populate but doesn't and get update failure message.

Tried to use E80 on own and update with same chip but it doesn't recognise chip.

Can only think to try again with smaller capacity CR card when I can find one in France.

Thanks for all advice

E120 at chart table now appears to work perfectly and E80 no longer confused as to what is the master but can't get E80 to see detail at present.

Out of ideas apart from try small capacity CF card when I can get one
