My new (to me) boat comes equipped with the E120 chart plotter.

I have tried to get it to show depth contours so as I can troll for tuna around the various drop off points. eg 500m and beyond
When setting up the cartography to show contour lines the depth contour selection only goes up in 5m increments to a max of 20m

The compact flash card is a Navionics, code 32P, Date V. 01, 19, Area Mediterranean West.

Should I get a more upto date card? And will it be able to show all contour lines from 5m right up to 2000m?

Thanks

Sorry to state obvious but they're either not on your charts or they have been turned off somewhere deep in a "chart appearance" menu.
I don't remember menus on e120 well enough to know if there is a user switch off for contour lines. But it looks like you already have the correct menu location and it isn't offering >20m depth contours so I guess that means the data isn't on the card. I did once have that very same compact flash card but not currently sorry.
I'm looking at my garmin set up right now and fwiw it has contours for 3,5,10,20,100,200,500,1000 metres but that doesn't help you

Hmmm. That does sound a bit like Silver edition charts, which only show the very shallow depths - but I thought these were only available as preloaded charts on the later chartplotters. Which flavour of E120 is it - classic or widescreen?

Good question! How can I tell which is which? The boat came without any manuals etc.

Surely screen size would not effect the chart software?
Is gold the next version up from silver and does that have the higher contour lines on it?

Update!

Managed to speak to Raymarine and Navionics. It would appear that the Code 32P is a platinum one and is top of the range. They suggested the plotter needs it software upgraded to V5.69 (The last version that my current card is compatible with.

So hope I can find a guy around here who can sort it as I am a bit of a whimp when it comes to messing around with computers!

Aha. It's an E120 classic then (and apols for talking rubbish about silver edition). Software update on the E120 classic is dead easy, you just need to get a cf card (and possibly a reader, if you haven't already got one) and all you basically do is download the software from raymarine.com, copy it to the card, power the e120 off, stick the card in it, power on, and let the magic happen.

Cheers. I will download it later and shoot out and get a card and reader. OR download it onto a usb stick and take it and a cf card to local raymarine outlet and see if they will copy it onto cf card.

OK so have now downloaded v 5.69 and its a zipped file so presumably I have to extract it and save to my computer and then transfer to cf card? or do I just transfer the zipped file to the CF card?

Unzip it, and transfer the file(s) to the root directory of the card, having removed any other files/directories from the card.
Then power up the plotter with the card in.

Many thanks. I assume I put the cf card in the same slot as the chart card is in before powering up. Then when upload is complete I power down and then put chart card back in?

FWIW I also have an E120 but with the Navionics Med & Black Sea cartridge in it. It has not been updated yet although I do have the update loaded on to a card. I'm waiting to pluck enough courage to plug in it!

I have found that the number of contour lanes displayed on the screen depends on what level of zoom you have and which area you are cruising in. We are currently in the Ligurian Sea area and I am seeing contour lines to depths of 800m which I haven't seen in other areas which have similarly deep waters. I'm guessing it may depend on the original charting data from which the electronic charts are derived as to whether you see particular contour lines or not

I'll check on my E120 later when I'm on the boat. However I can't see much point in seeing contour lines much beyond say 100m, deeper than that, what difference does it make to a surface vessel?
