I had a bad experience last year when fitting two Axioms and other kit on my boat when the guy I had been using for a while doing mainly electrical stuff without a problem offered to do my new work.
He asked for, and received, full payment in advance for the hardware but the installation was not good with physical damage to my nice panel as well as other gripes.
This coincided with a problem with the Axioms not always switching on. At this point I found that the guy was not a Raymarine dealer, I stupidly had not checked, and spoke to Raymarine at SBS who said they would support through a dealer and did so swapping out both Axioms under warranty which fixed the switching problem and I paid this dealer to fix other stuff and install RMK remotes (touch sounds great until you are under way!).
Now the time comes to replace the first generation Satellite TV dish and a quote is received and accepted by the ‘proper’ dealer but afterwards a request to pay all the hardware up front.

This makes me a bit jittery after the last fiasco and I wonder what the panel think of such a request?

Is this normal practice?

I had the whole lot replaced on new boat, Axiom, auto, sat tv etc. Paid upfront. This was through a well known & trusted supplier so just make the usual checks if you have had ltd dealings with them.

Is Sat TV not dead now?

Just run internet TVs off a dongle. It will cost you £50 or less and you get free internet as a bonus.

In the med it is almost totally dead as the change in sky propagation area requires a huge dish.

I get 120gb of data for E75 and the rate in the Uk is probably less.

+1. Sat tv is dead. 4g router, diy install to smart tv, job done.

Tell Nicky that ! We have 4g as well so all bases covered, once we were in a bad spot in St Kats with no tv, my fault I didn't get a better berth, so new boat has sat, 4g & glomex. As an aside on the east coast 4g is often not available. If we cruise down to devon area from new home on Isle of Wight I fully expect 4g to be patchy & we will be wanting to spend some time there.

Hi aviator

I find decent internet access around the Channel Islands hit and miss with a dongle. , if sat is proving to be less popular
There must be a good deal to be had on the hardware

Cheers

Thanks and yes it was great to meet up and Guernsey and thanks for your demo of your Raymarine kit.

I have put the dish replacement on hold pro tem as there as many items to fix like the AIS and VHF oh and the DTV. The dealer says he will do this list next week.

Thanks to all for their comments.
