I'm contemplating updating the charts on my C70 chartplotter and would welcome advise from those who have previously done this.
Have to admit I'm slightly confused between the info from a chandler who says just hand in the old chip and he'll send it away etc, and the alterternative on the Navonics site ( link from Raymarine) who seem to be suggesting transferring the maps from a MSD card to the Raymarine's CF card.

I got a new update cartridge for my C80 last January from Navionics.

Since then, I have been able to update the CF card 'online' and will be able to do so until January. Be warned that the download is over 300MB for the 28XG chart!

They have also recently introduced a community layer on charts and I will be looking if the chart update included this - quite useful as local navigation changes can be incorporated from other users. It works viewing the downloaded charts using the PCAPP from Navionics, but as said, I need to see if my C80 will display this additional community layer.

If you do French cruising, I noticed that the seabed layer was pink around some areas of Brittany making the chart almost illegible. This data is apparently included by the French Hydrographic office and on the Raymarine menu you can find an option to turn off the seabed layer which fixes this.

How much did they charge for an updasted card.
Last time I enquired at the local chandlery, they said to hand in my existing card, and I would then purchase an updated card at half the retail price, which worked out at about £150 I think

£150 is the new price for a 28XG (Gold) - Platinum are IMHO a waste of money if you only have a C Series.

I paid around £95 for the update CF card (all done with Navionics at the London Boat show last year) - you return your old one and in a couple of days you have a new one. There do not seem to be discounts around on this.

Thanks, the platinum card came with the boat/plotter (C Series).
So looks like I might be better off buying a new Gold card and then continue to update that one

Navionics Charts New are £189.99 for Gold and £299.99 for Platinum. Updates are 50% of these prices so £95.00 for Gold and £150 Platinum. with both you now get free PC app and Updates for the following year (downloadable)

Before proceeding, check out first that the C70/80 series shows little benefit from Platinum instead of Gold - unless the C70/80 software has changed dramatically, I 'think' that many of the Platinum features are not available.

Boat show visit maybe?

Its probably worth noting that the current 'wide' version C series have differing capabilities to thier normal width predecessors. Compatability with digital radar scanners is one but, IIRC, they also include some functionality which was only available on the E series.

I'm curious is there any difference between the info on these cards and the iPhone version I have? I don't wish to use my phone as a plotter but it seems like madness to charge such different sums for the different formats.

Don't even get me started on branding electronic charts as widescreen!
