Raymarine C80-Screen Flicker when Radar Overlay On

The set up is a C80 with a analogue radar scanner. The C80 displays radar fine on radar only page and the chart fine on a chart only page. However, when I overlay the radar image onto the chart on ranges from 1.5 miles up the screen starts flickering. At close in ranges the image is fine and stable. Anyone any thoughts? The voltage at the chart plotter is circa 13.5V (the engine was running and charging). Thanks.

Is this a case of too much data? There was a tech note from Navionics to delete the .bp2 files on the CF chart card which can speed up the redraw of the charts on the plotter screen.
Have you tried course up vs head up to see if that makes any difference? Split View with radar and chart side by side?

I’d usually say If it is just the radar output flickering and not charts or system display (soft keys, etc) then you may find it is the video output of the radome. There will be a coax cable within the large radar loom that is screen and centre pin which you’ll find in the dome or array. Check these and maybe cut and reterminate if anyway suspect.

The fact it does it only on overlay is strange. Could be a data or processing problem. The only easy way To check is to start swapping bits.

It's a long time since I fitted a C-series and radar on my previous boat, but I'm pretty sure there was no coax visible in the connectors - just a multipin plug and a couple of power cables as I recall.

That's it. White is the inner, black is the screen outer.

The few I've seen, not all Raymarine, have had high resistance on the screen conductor causing bad images but that is consistent with all functions, not just overlay.

Only other option if the dome isn't accessible is to put OP's screen on another compatible scanner or vice versa to see if the problem follows something and becomes logical.

The multipin plug isn't easy to mess about with, especially if the scanner's up the mast!

Thanks. I have managed to borrow another c80 so will swap with my existing one to see if it is the scanner or the chart plotter. BTW Raymarine said send it in for service if not low voltage. However it is the fact it is only a problem on overlay (and then only on more distant ranges) that is puzzling. I will have a look at headings etc when next on the boat.
